If your middle school child wants to start dating, you might think twice. A recent study of teens living in northeast Georgia found that early dating interferes with school success and leads to other bad things. It looked at frequency of dating in relationship to high school dropout rates and teacher ratings of study skills.

The findings were published in the Journal of Research on Adolescence. Some students never or hardly ever dated from middle school through high school and these students had the best study skills. Throughout the study, students who dated more were rated by teachers as having worse study skills. Dating is a term mostly used by adults who are looking for someone to share their lives with. But as much as we write off, ignore, deny, or just plain oppose it, we are all children. What even happens in a middle school relationship?

Simply being labeled as someone’s boyfriend or girlfriend is confirmation that one is enough. In middle school, kids are much more interested.

You have a point but I also agree with another person that said if you’re 16 and younger then it’s not a relationship because you’re testing out these new emotions with crushes and stuff. I know people who are older than me who have been dating since they were 16 or 17 and still happy in their relationship. Those are the type of relationships that could but I never had.

So, when my friends slip into it, what do I tell them? First off, I completely agree with this PI Girl.

And although we already know that junior high school dating was a major in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else.

Dating people who go to your school always brings unnecessary drama. The moment two teens at school decide they are a couple, everyone else is in the relationship too. This is why it’s so much better to date someone who goes to a different school. You don’t have to constantly hear about your boyfriend getting a little too close to that girl in his third-period class. Nor do you have to worry about that guy who keeps trying to make a move on your girlfriend during lunch while you sit in physics class.

When two people date at school, others always want to know what you and your boo did over the weekend, or they want to talk about what their status was on Facebook last night. Basically, when you date someone inside your school, you hear more about your relationship from other people than from your significant other. Some people may argue that being in a relationship with someone from another school is more complicated because you can’t see what they are doing or who they are with.

But if trust is an issue, then maybe there’s a bigger problem at hand.
